*The year’s Rural Community College Alliance (RCCA) Annual Conference is pleased to offer employees of RCCA member institutions a special track led by the Council for Resource Development (CRD) with a focus on building the capacity of rural community college development professionals.  Rural community college development officers have unique opportunities and challenges based on place.  This track will provide information and inspiration to those that serve rural and remote locations.  As indicated in a recent survey of development professionals, there is a great need for training and professional development in order to leverage resources from the communities in which the colleges reside and the alumni which they served.  RCCA has received a grant from the Lumina Foundation for Education to cover the cost of conference registration and two nights lodging for a limited number of participants.  To be eligible the employee’s college must be a member of RCCA and cover the cost of travel.  The participant must attend each session of the CRD track to be considered for an additional training opportunity.

Leveraging influence and affluence for college success in resource development: Foundation, Grants and Advocacy

Rural community colleges face special challenges, but exciting opportunities when developing their resource development functions. The comprehensive community college resource development function moves away from silos and towards integration. This session will also cover the development audit (infrastructure, performance and stewardship reviews), and cover the basic legal requirements and policies and procedures for a well-functioning development office.

This session will outline the roles and responsibilities of all the partners in the development process, illustrate models of organization and describe an institution-wide culture of integrating resource development into the strategic planning and budgeting functions of the institution.

Building the Successful Foundation Board

This session will provide practical, hands on, go to information on how to build a dynamic and active foundation board and how to leverage those resources in your grants development efforts. Sample documents and policies and procedures will be part of the hand-outs.

Building the Successful Grants Office

This session will cover the elements of a successful grants office and how to build effective collaborations with internal and external partners. Department structure and grant management, evaluation and reporting will also be covered. Hand-outs will include sample policies and procedures, operating documents, and more.

Building the Successful Development Function

The presenters will facilitate discussion of current resource development functions/structures at attendees’ institutions and provide opportunity for attendees to present solutions.

The entire morning will be devoted to a review of fundraising strategies, including types of fundraising campaigns, prospect research, donor giving motivation, and how to make an ask, role of consultants, and how to convene and build community partnerships.
